Are Tourist T-Shirts Cool Again?
Is the destination tee is having its moment?
For years, the tacky tourist t-shirt was easy to make fun of.
A big destination name with a palm tree and a sunset. Maybe an overly-aggressive happy slogan. But at least when you had to actually go somewhere to get one, they had a little more meaning. That was a long time ago though, and now you can just buy a Paris or Vegas t-shirt at your local big box store.
But even despite all that, something a little weird is happening.
The tourist t-shirt is cool again.
Listen to this Story on the 1923 Main Street Podcast
Fashion has a funny way of resurrecting things that were once permanently uncool. And now, destination t-shirts are getting another look from designers, fashion editors and people who actually care about what they wear.
While graphic tees have always been what we’re all about 1923 Main Street, graphic tees in general are experiencing a resurgence, with fashion coverage loving expressive, nostalgic and personality-driven designs.
But the destination tee has a story, and not every graphic t-shirt has that.
The Tee for Those Who Surf the Coldest Swells
Inspired by the souls who slip on a 5/4 or 6/4 steamer and paddle out into the frigid waters of the Northern Pacific because that’s where the waves are (whether it’s surfing Tofino, or anywhere else). Our Northern Pacific Surf Crew unisex tee is soft and comfortable, made to welcome you after an epic day in the surf or bring back memories every time you slip it on.
Also available as a hoodie.

From Souvenir to Style Statement
The classic tacky tourist t-shirt was never about fashion, it was the proof of saying "I went there." A flex.
The shirt was evidence that you’d been to some cool place and not everyone had.
But then, as times changed and travel become more accessible, that’s also what started to make them a little uncool. But now that awkwardness is part of the appeal.
Fashion loves nostalgia, irony and clothes that feel personal over polished. The return of destination graphics fits right into that mood. ELLE magazine recently highlighted the tourist tee as a 2026 fashion trend following its appearance in Chanel's Métiers d'Art collection, while Who What Wear has similarly identified tourist t-shirts as one of the year's notable shifts in casual dressing.
The souvenir shirt has gone from something you hid in your suitcase to something you might deliberately pack.

The Best Tourist T-Shirts Feel Like Souvenirs
There is an important distinction that needs to be made though: not every shirt with a destination printed across the front suddenly becomes great design.
The interesting ones feel like they came from somewhere. They might use vintage typography, or a retro colour palette. A local reference or old-school travel-poster aesthetic with a classic surf break, these are the kinds of things that can work.
Basically, the destination becomes part of the design and not always the entire design. That’s what separates a shirt that happens to say where you went from one that actually captures the feeling of being there.

Why Travel Makes Such Good Graphic Design
Travel and graphic tees have always had a natural relationship. It’s all about the visuals:
Road signs
Postcards
National parks
Airline graphics
Surf shops
Ski resorts
Hotels and Motels
Beach clubs and Boardwalks
Main Streets
These places have decades of visual history. A good travel graphic can make you feel the vibe of a place before you’ve ever been there. And it can also help you remember the place you visited and loved after your trip is over.
Respect to the Waves of Nazaré and those Who Attempt to Conquer Them
Whether you’re bold enough to drop into the world’s most iconic big waves or simply want to witness the spectacle from the cliffs above, Nazaré belongs on every surfer’s Bucket List.
The Bucket List Nazaré surfing t-shirt by 1923 Main Street® pays tribute to the grit, courage, and pure adrenaline of anyone who has ever surfed—or even paddled out—at this legendary break in its fiercest moments.
Soft, comfortable, and always ready for adventure, this tee delivers everything Nazaré’s waves don’t: effortless wear, everyday comfort, and a perfect fit for dreamers and thrill-seekers alike.

You Don’t Even Have to Be a Tourist
This might be the best thing about the current tourist-tee revival: you don’t actually have to be on vacation to wear one.
In fact, the contrast makes the shirt more interesting. The shirt becomes a reminder of travel rather than a uniform for tourists.
That’s a subtle but important difference.
Haute Couture Skate? Probably Not.
Skateboarding is a global language, even in places where street skating is off-limits. In Monte Carlo, you might not be able to skate the streets, but the waterfront skate park still delivers—sun, concrete and clean lines.
The Monte Carlo Skateboarding t-shirt by 1923 Main Street® apparel is part of our Skate the World series, inspired by iconic destinations we have visited and tested on four wheels. Made from soft, comfortable fabric with a classic skate tee fit, this skateboard T-shirt is built for everyday wear—at the park, on the board, or off the clock.
A clean graphic, global skate attitude, and easy comfort make this a go-to skateboarding shirt wherever you ride.

So, are Tourist T-Shirts Cool Again?
Yes, but there’s a catch.
The destination alone isn’t enough. A good tourist t-shirt needs a point of view. It should make you want to wear it even when you’re nowhere near the place that’s on it.
The fashion world may have rediscovered the tourist tee, but travellers never really forgot why they bought them in the first place.
We like wearing our memories.
And maybe that is the coolest thing about the tourist t-shirt after all.
