The Top Five Ways to Wear Your Favorite Graphic T-Shirt in Winter

Here are five ways to keep wearing graphic t-shirts throughout the coldest days of fall and winter.

1. Under an Open Flannel Shirt

The classic board-sports combination.

A graphic tee under an open flannel is one of those classic combos that never really goes out of style. It works because the layers have different jobs: the t-shirt brings the graphic design, while the flannel adds texture, warmth and another colour to the mix.

Try a black graphic tee under a buffalo plaid shirt. Or maybe a red, green or neutral flannel with a cream t-shirt.

When it gets colder, add a jacket to the mix for an even more classic snowboard style. You still get the layered look without sacrificing the graphic entirely.

2. Under a Hoodie

Double-up without overthinking.

A t-shirt under a hoodie isn’t new, but that’s the point with this one.

The tee might peek out above the neckline of the hoodie, show below the hem, or make its presence known when you take the hoodie off. Go with a graphic tee that you like wearing on its own, not necessarily one you don’t expect anyone to see, because you never know.

For snowboard days and cold-weather travel, this combination also gives you flexibility for temperatures changes. Wear the hoodie on its own when conditions are good, or add a weather-appropriate outer layer when you need more wind or cold protection.

3. Under a Denim or Workwear Jacket

A little structure goes a long way.

A denim jacket, canvas coat or workwear-inspired jacket gives a graphic tee a totally different look and feel from the flannel shirt style.

The jacket adds structure while the t-shirt keeps the outfit more chill. A bold graphic can become the focal point, while a smaller design gives you a more understated look.

This combination works well with jeans, casual pants, cargos or even leggings. It is an easy way to bring skate-inspired style into everyday winter wear.

4. Under a Snowboard Jacket

The mountain is already a layering lesson.

Every snowboarder knows that clothing works in layers. A t-shirt can be a first-layer under a hoodie or fleece, but also under your snowboard jacket. It all depends on the conditions and the warmth and style of your jacket (is it a shell, or a super warm down?).

For riding days, go with layers based on temperature, moisture management and activity level. A cotton graphic tee may be fine as a casual base layer or for a mild day, but a moisture-wicking technical base layer is a good choice when you’re riding hard, sweating or spending hours in the cold.

Save the graphic tee for the lodge, après, travel days or as a layer you reveal when the jacket comes off. Your favourite graphic doesn’t have to be your technical base layer to be part of your snowboard outfit.

5. Under a Cardigan or Overshirt

Graphic tees aren’t just for a ride in the park.

If you want to take a graphic t-shirt somewhere other than a skate or snowboard park, try wearing one under a cardigan or a heavier unbuttoned overshirt.

The contrast is what makes this one work. It’s a classic combo similar to the plaid style above (#1). A graphic tee brings a little of your own personality to an otherwise simple combination, while the outer layer keeps things relaxed – but put together.

This is also a good opportunity to wear some of your graphics that are a little more off-the-wall. You don’t need a giant logo to make an outfit interesting.

Sometimes a small, unexpected graphic is perfect.

Bottom Line: The Best Winter Outfit Might Already Be in Your Drawer

Your favorite summer t-shirts don’t have to disappear in colder months. A good graphic tee can work under a flannel, a hoodie, a jacket or as part of a snowboard-inspired everyday outfit. The layers change with the weather; the graphic is uniquely you.
